How Long Does It Take to Build Typing Speed?

Writer: Smartecheducation CentreSmartecheducation Centre

If you are learning to type or preparing for a typing test, one common question that arises is: How long does it take to build typing speed? Or, how much preparation is needed to pass a typing test? This is not just your question; almost every student preparing for a typing exam has the same query. In this blog, I will share my 15 years of experience in this field and provide you with a structured approach to achieving your typing goals.

Understanding the Typing Test Requirements

Before you start preparing for any typing test, you need to understand the test pattern. Different exams have different requirements, such as:

  • Required typing speed (Words Per Minute - WPM)

  • Required accuracy percentage

  • Whether the test is character-based or word-based

For instance, in the Punjab & Haryana High Court Clerk Exam, candidates must achieve 30 WPM in both English and Punjabi with 92% accuracy to pass the test. However, if 30 WPM is the requirement, you should aim for at least 40 WPM to be on the safer side. Additionally, if the minimum accuracy requirement is 92%, then you should practice with 98% accuracy to ensure better performance under exam pressure.

Preparing for the Typing Test: A Smart Approach

Many students make a common mistake: they focus on passing their written exam first and only start preparing for the typing test afterward. This can be problematic because once the written exam is cleared, the typing test date is usually near, leaving only one or two months for preparation. Due to this time pressure, many candidates struggle to improve their typing speed within the limited time frame.

To avoid this, it is highly recommended that you start typing practice alongside your written exam preparation. This way, by the time you clear your written exam, you will already have built sufficient typing speed and accuracy.

How Long Does It Take to Improve Typing Speed?

The time required to build typing speed varies from person to person. Some candidates with a fast learning ability can achieve good speed within one month, while others may take longer. However, for a consistent and reliable typing speed, a minimum of six months of dedicated practice is recommended.

Best Practices for Typing Speed Improvement

  1. Be Consistent and Disciplined: Typing requires regular practice. Even if you practice for just one hour daily, consistency is key.

  2. Avoid Overloading Yourself: Many students believe that practicing all day and night in the final month before the exam will help them pass. However, excessive practice without breaks can cause fatigue, irritation, and body pain.

  3. Follow a Structured Plan: Instead of cramming at the last minute, distribute your practice sessions over six months with at least one hour of daily practice.

  4. Use Reliable Resources: Platforms like Smart Education Computer Institute, near Punjab University, Patiala, provide structured training programs that have consistently helped students achieve top results.

  5. Check Online Resources: There are many playlists and tutorial videos available online for English and Punjabi typing. Checking out these resources can give you additional guidance.
